The 2nd Test in Trinidad is interestingly poised after an intriguing fourth day. The Windies finished at stumps on 170/5 with a lead of 119 after Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dwayne Bravo rescued them from a dire situation when the two came together at 92/5.
The Windies started the day just as they would have hoped as the unlikely hero with the ball, Chris Gayle (4/50), took all four of the remaining South African wickets to wrap up their innings in stunning fashion, restricting the lead to just 51.
On a pitch which looked to be deteriorating quickly the Windies needed a positive start. However, that wasn't to be as Gayle's good fortunes came to an abrupt end when Ntini struck early (14/1), getting one to lift on Gayle (1) who fended the ball to gully and departed for the second time in the game without making an impression.
Needing to rebuild, Sarwan and opener Wavell Hinds went about wiping off the 1st innings deficit as the two scrapped for a valuable 2nd wicket partnership against a hostile South African attack. After almost three hours at the crease Hinds (22) was finally dismissed by Boje who trapped the left-hander in front for leg-before (79/2).
In trouble at effectively 18 for 2 matters became dramatically worse for the Windies' as their middle order crumbled in matter of minutes. Brian Lara was unable to repeat his first innings heroics when Boje got one to turn in the rough and keep low, finding its way through the defences of Lara who was bowled for just 4 (85/3).
The very next over the West Indian captain departed for just 1 when Ntini struck with a leg-before shout (86/4). Then Pagon (2) failed for the second time in the match when the right hander was bowled by Ntini to put the Windies in a hopeless situation at 92 for 5.
In a pile of trouble the Windies needed a partnership desperately and thanks to a resilient Dwayne Bravo and a determined Ramnaresh Sarwan the hosts were able to slowly crawl their way back into the game. The pair fought hard against a fired up Proteas attack on a crumbling wicket and with intense concentration the pair managed to grind what could turn out to be a match-saving 6th wicket partnership.
Sarwan put his hand up when the Windies were in trouble and played a special innings which contained 9 boundaries in 190 balls, finishing at stumps on 93 after his failure in the 1st innings on the opening day. Bravo (30*) gave solid support as he also remained not out at stumps, giving the Windies a slight glimmer of hope of a possible victory on the fifth and final day.
